ABOUT RMTAG

The Regenerative Medicine Technical Advisory Group (RMTAG) provides guidance on the development of terminology, coding, and labeling in the fields of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and products that fall between tissue and cellular therapy.

The group is composed of technical experts in regenerative medicine and cellular therapy. Additionally, it includes representatives from organizations with an interest in regenerative medicine, liaisons from groups interested in ISBT 128, and observers from licensed vendors.

RMTAG was first established in 2012 under the name Tissue Engineered Products Technical Advisory Group (TEPTAG). It was later renamed the Regenerative Medicine Technical Advisory Group (RMTAG) to reflect a broader scope.

As the global exchange of medical products of human origin (MPHO) has transcended national borders, international cooperation has become crucial for establishing standardized terminology, coding, and labeling practices. In 2015, RMTAG addressed this need by developing global terminology for tissue-engineered products (TEPs), laying the foundation for international standardization and traceability. Building on this work, the group is now leading the development of an international labeling standard.

RMTAG is currently developing an international labeling standard for tissue-engineered products. This initiative aims to enhance patient safety by supporting the uniform electronic encoding of key product information, minimizing manual transcription errors, and strengthening international traceability and biovigilance.
