The ICCBBA Grant initiative was created to provide support for projects operating at the local, national or regional level, including resource-constrained settings. The primary goal is to facilitate the creation and advancement of a robust organizational framework, especially in cases where these projects have a significant impact on electronic information management and traceability.
Overview
ICCBBA has assigned a total of $100,000 to the grant fund for 2026 with a maximum single grant of $50,000 per project.
- To build technical capacity in transfusion and/or transplantation activities in terms of safety and efficiency.
- To assist transfusion/transplantation establishments in achieving reliable traceability of all MPHO that they manage.
- To enable ICCBBA to achieve its mission to develop and advance the ISBT 128 Standard for medical products of human origin (MPHO) or other therapeutic biological products to enhance global traceability and achieve harmonization for improved healthcare systems efficiency and patient safety.
Before beginning the application, organizations must complete the eligibility screening below. For-profit organizations are not eligible to apply but may form part of a project consortium. Applicants who respond “No” to any question will not qualify to proceed with the application process.
- Organizational Type: Is your organization a non-profit, public institution, governmental agency, or other not-for-profit entity?
- Service Alignment: Does your organization provide services related to transfusion, transplantation and/or administration of Medical Products of Human Origin (MPHO)?
- Project Focus: Will your proposed project build technical capacity in transfusion and/or transplantation activities to improve safety and operational efficiency for Medical Products of Human Origin (MPHO)?
- Traceability: Will your project facilitate the achievement of reliable traceability for all Medical Products of Human Origin (MPHO) managed by your organization?
- Patient Safety & International Standards: Will your project enhance patient safety through the development, implementation, or maintenance of international information standards for Medical Products of Human Origin (MPHO)?

ICCBBA is pleased to spotlight the recipients of the 2025 Enterprise Grant, recognizing three organizations advancing traceability, data integrity, and patient safety across transfusion and transplantation systems worldwide. Collectively, these projects reflect a strong commitment to modernizing information systems and strengthening global interoperability through alignment with the ISBT 128 Standard. Funded initiatives include the development of an open, interoperable labeling protocol to standardize donor human milk tracking and improve hospital workflows; the implementation of a centralized CRM platform to enhance donor data security, matching accuracy, and international coordination for transplantation; and targeted enhancements to blood product traceability within hospital gynecology and obstetrics departments to support safer transfusion practices. Together, these efforts establish scalable, high-impact solutions that reinforce quality systems and expand access to safe, efficient care — particularly in resource-constrained settings.

ICCBBA is proud to spotlight the recipients of the 2024 Enterprise Grant, recognizing three organizations driving meaningful advancements in patient safety, blood accessibility, and quality systems across Africa. These funded initiatives focused on strengthening technical infrastructure and improving traceability for Medical Products of Human Origin (MPHO) in resource-constrained settings. Projects included the implementation of a blood safety informatics system and enhanced quality management framework to support accreditation readiness and establish a regional training reference center in Cameroon; the expansion of a national Blood Safety Information System to regional facilities in Ethiopia to enable full traceability from collection through transfusion; and the development of a digital Blood Alarm System in Uganda designed to improve accountability, support timely transfusions, and promote safer use of blood products. Together, these efforts advanced organizational capacity, reinforced electronic information management, and contributed to more reliable and efficient transfusion systems at both national and regional levels.

2023
ICSPP (International Coalition for Safe Plasma Proteins), Hosted by ISBT
The 2023 grant went to the International Coalition for Safe Plasma Proteins (ICSPP). ICCBBA awarded $20,000 to help address the global insufficiency of plasma-derived medicinal products that are unavailable or unaffordable in many low- and middle- income countries (LMIC) and the consequent suffering and early mortality of patients with bleeding disorders and immune deficiencies who lack adequate treatments.

2021
Safe Blood for Africa Foundation
The Safe Blood for Africa Foundation (SBFA) is a nonprofit organization with offices throughout Africa, are the recipients of the 2021 ICCBBA Enterprise Grant for their continued improvements to transfusion safety practices in Cameroon.

2020
Dr. Sardjito Hospital and Safe Blood for Africa Foundation
Dr. Sardjito Hospital, a nonprofit teaching hospital in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and the SBFA, a nonprofit organization with offices throughout Africa, are the recipients of the 2020 ICCBBA Enterprise Grant. Both proposals aim to improve transfusion safety practices in Indonesia and Cameroon, respectively.

2017
Global Healing, a nonprofit organization based in Berkeley, California, USA, was selected for its proposal to strengthen the quality management system of the blood bank at the Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais (HUM) in Haiti.
